A 28-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle car crash in Pasadena early Monday that caused the car to split in half.

The four-door sedan hit a light pole in the 1300 block of East Del Mar Boulevard around 2:45 a.m. The driver -- the only occupant of the car -- was pronounced dead at the scene.

“When I saw the vehicle, it was too hard to tell what make and model it was,” said Pasadena Police Sgt. Art Ehute.

Police are still investigating the crash. Although it is unknown whether alcohol was involved, it appears that speed may have been a factor, Ehute said.

The identity of the driver was not immediately released.

A portion of East Del Mar Boulevard between Hill and Holliston avenues was closed while authorities investigated the crash, according to police. It was reopened shortly before 10 a.m.
