The harrowing rescue of a man who almost plunged to his death at
On May 28, just before noon, a backpacker nearly died when he almost fell over a waterfall, but he was able to scramble and get on a boulder in the middle of the river.
The unidentified man was on a boulder below a series of cascades in class V+ whitewater in an area referred to as the “Inner Gorge,” according to park officials.
Crews determined a "short haul" rescue operation could be performed in the area.
The man was rescued by a helicopter, which can be seen in the video hovering over the gorge at the base of Upper Yosemite Falls, making it possible for a rescuer to reach the stranded hiker.
The backpacker was treated for hypothermia but suffered no other injuries.
