Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti joined a growing list of local leaders lining up behind former U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, giving her his endorsement Saturday.

Solis is running to replace Gloria Molina, who has represented the district that includes downtown Los Angeles and much of the eastern county for the past 23 years. Molina is being forced out by term limits.

Molina has endorsed Solis, as have a lengthy list of other elected officials, labor and business groups.

Garcetti announced his endorsement at a Solis campaign rally at the Hecho en Mexico restaurant in El Sereno.

“I support Hilda Solis because she’s always been an advocate for economic justice and opportunity, fighting for education, job training, fair wages and economic security for immigrants and citizens alike,” the mayor said.

Solis said she and Garcetti both want to improve environmental sustainability and job creation: “If elected supervisor, I know that Mayor Garcetti and I will be able to forge a strong partnership.”

Two other contenders are running in the race: El Monte Councilman Juventino “J” Gomez and school police officer April Saucedo Hood.
