3 dead, 2 injured after truck rolls over in Santa Clarita
Three people were killed and two others injured after the truck they were in rolled over Thursday night and tumbled down an embankment near Sierra Highway in Santa Clarita, authorities said.
The group was traveling up Rush Canyon Truck Trail, less than a mile from Sierra Highway, when the red truck rolled over, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Rob Hahnlein. The vehicle tumbled 200 to 300 feet down the embankment before coming to a rest, he added.
The crash was reported Friday at 7:15 a.m. when one of the survivors apparently came to and called for help.
“He must’ve have been passed out all night,” Hahnlein said.
Three people were pronounced dead, while one of two others who were injured had to be airlifted to a hospital, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Francisco Villalobos. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known, he said.
None of their identities were immediately released.
It is unclear if alcohol was involved in the crash or if the driver simply could not navigate the turn, Hahnlein said.
“There are some steep canyons up there,” he said.
CHP was investigating the crash.
