Kathy Degner was at Legg Lake in the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area on July 29 looking for juvenile American coots. At the lake's edge, she spotted a great blue heron standing motionless. She approached it, and it began preening itself.
"I loved how the breeze was ruffling his feathers, and was just hoping for a good shot," she said.
Degner used a Canon EOS 7D.
