After lawmakers’ legislative flurry, Brown to appear in San Francisco
Gov. Jerry Brown is heading to San Francisco on Friday to sign a memorandum on climate change with the Chinese government, but the focus of the questioning is likely to be this year’s legislative session, which wrapped up last night amid a flurry of landmark bills Brown has already said he would sign.
The governor said he will approve a measure giving undocumented immigrants the right to obtain a driver’s license, a shift from his position in the 2010 campaign.
Lawmakers also passed an increase in the state’s minimum wage to $10 per hour in 2016, an easing of state environmental laws for developments near transit stops, and new regulations on oil extraction in the final week of the session -- all measures Brown has already said he will sign into law.
Brown was heavily engaged in the final legislative push, helping to shape much of the major policy that will appear on his desk.
Making his rounds in the Capitol on Thursday night, Brown offered only a dismissive “nothing substantive” in response to questions about the legislative activity. But he was more effusive about an impromptu game of Wiffle ball that he and his wife enjoyed in the courtyard outside the governor’s office Thursday afternoon. Perhaps he was speaking about both when he told a reporter, “I hit a few out of the park.”
