Drive-by shooting of girl, 15, in Watts gang-related, police say
The victim was hospitalized after she was shot in the chest while standing at a street corner, investigators say. The vehicle believed used in the attack was later found abandoned with a gun inside.
A 15-year-old girl was hospitalized this morning after being shot in the chest in Watts in what authorities are calling a gang-related drive-by attack.
The girl, whose name has not been released, was standing at the corner of East 110th Street and Lou Dillon Avenue shortly after 9 Monday night when suspects drove up in a Jeep Cherokee and opened fire with a handgun, said Sgt. Lee Sands of the Los Angeles Police Department.
No one else was injured in the shooting, Sands said.
The girl was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in stable condition. Sands could not say what the girl’s condition was this morning and hospital staff refused to comment.
Soon after the shooting, investigators found a Jeep Cherokee near the Watts Arms apartments in the 10000 block of Beach Street. Inside the vehicle, they recovered a handgun they believe was used in the shooting, Sands said.
Sands said investigators believe the shooting was gang-related, but did not say whether the victim had any gang ties.
No arrests had been made in connection with the shooting, Sands said.
Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to contact police at (213) 972-7813 or (877) 529-3855.
