Los Angeles County Sheriff’s authorities Sunday were investigating two unrelated shootings that left one person dead and another in grave condition.

A man was shot in Signal Hill about 8 p.m. Saturday as he stood in the rear of an apartment complex in the 2300 block of Lewis Avenue, Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Li said. The man was shot in a nearby alley. He was hit in the upper torso and taken to a hospital where his condition was listed as “death imminent,” Li said.

About 8:10 p.m., a man was killed in the 1400 block of East Alondra Boulevard in Compton when someone walked up to him and began shooting, Li said.

Sheriff’s investigators believe the Compton shooting was gang-related. The victim was taken to a hospital where he died, Li said.
