Laguna football closes out season against Godinez

The 2015 season will come to an end Friday night in a familiar setting for the Laguna Beach High football team.

The Breakers will conclude their campaign against Godinez in an Orange Coast League finale at Segerstrom High in Santa Ana. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Segerstrom has been the site of two previous games this year for Laguna, and the Breakers will be looking to get their first victory at Jaguar Stadium. They dropped a nonleague game in September to Segerstrom, and a league contest to Saddleback last month.

Laguna will be after its first league win when it takes on the Grizzlies who come into Friday’s meeting with a 3-1 league record, one game behind league-leading Calvary Chapel.

The Breakers are 2-7 overall. The Grizzlies are 5-4.

A year ago, Godinez went winless (0-10).

“They are a very good team,” Laguna Coach Ted Clarke said of Godinez. “They have a new head coach [Michael Echaves] who has them believing. He’s turned around that program and has to be commended for the nice job he’s done over there.”

In Laguna’s last league outing Oct. 1, the Breakers were handed a 40-0 loss by Calvary Chapel. The Eagles (6-3 overall, 4-0 league; No. 9, CIF Southern Section Southern Division) clinched at least a share of the league title with the win.

“I thought we did well defensively,” Clarke said. “The one thing we need to learn to do, and this is across the board, is we need to finish. By that, I mean finish plays, series, quarters, and games. We haven’t gotten there yet.”

Godinez won its second consecutive league game by overcoming a 14-0 deficit at Estancia to overwhelm the Eagles, 49-21. Junior quarterback Bryan Ibarra wreaked havoc by rushing for 265 yards and five touchdowns including a pair of 90-yard scoring runs, and also threw two TD passes.

“They have a nice-looking quarterback [Ibarra] and their entire offense goes through that young man,” Clarke said. “They are playing some good football right now, and this is a big game for them. It will take our best effort to beat them.”
