The chase for the Sunset League softball title is over, but league teams still remain in the hunt for a CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoff berth.

Los Alamitos has wrapped up an undisputed league championship, Huntington Beach is headed to the playoffs, and Marina currently resides in third place, but Edison and Fountain Valley still are in the playoff picture.

Seventh-ranked Huntington Beach fell to 6-3 in league and 20-5 overall after it lost, 7-0, Tuesday at third-ranked Los Alamitos. Ivy Davis went two for three in the loss.

The Oilers, who had handed Los Alamitos its only league loss April 21, picked up their sixth league win May 5 by defeating visiting Edison, 6-2.

Huntington played Saturday in the championship game of the Michelle Carew Classic, and out-hit (10-4) second-ranked Orange Lutheran but lost to the Lancers, 6-4. Davis and Allie Bunker had two hits each.

Edison moved into a tie for third place in the Sunset standings Tuesday by defeating visiting Fountain Valley, 6-2. For the Chargers, Kayla Neff had a two-run single in the bottom of the first, Rachel Abboud hit a two-run home run and scored twice, Aislinn Martin had an RBI double and scored twice, Riley Wester scored twice, and Kiana Pancino recorded the pitching win.

Edison improved to 4-5 in league (tied for third with Fountain Valley) and 14-12 overall.

Taylor Golden homered among three hits, Vanessa Sardinas has two hits and Liana Castro (hit) had an RBI for the Barons (4-5 league, 14-13 overall).

“When an entire team is firing on all cylinders and every girl wants the win as bad as the next, this is the type of game you get,” Edison Coach Kim Ensey said of her team’s win. “With their backs against the wall in a must-win situation, the girls executed and closed it out.”

Marina improved to 5-4 in league and 11-15 overall Tuesday by defeating visiting Newport Harbor, 5-2. Jennifer Herron went two for four and Julia Carreon (2-0) allowed only two hits without an earned run and struck out seven for the Vikings.

The Sunset League season comes to a close Thursday. Games at 3:15 p.m. include Huntington at Fountain Valley, Edison at Newport Harbor, and Marina hosting Los Alamitos.

Ocean View hosted Segerstrom Tuesday in Golden West League play and lost to the Jaguars, 8-1.

Kari Lane hit two doubles and Lacey Combs went two for two with a walk and drove in Lane for the Seahawks’ lone run. Pitcher Breann Page came on in relief and shut down Segerstrom’s offense by only allowing one run in her four innings.

Ocean View fell to 7-2 in league and 14-6 overall. The Seahawks are tied for the league lead with Segerstrom and Loara.

“There is something about Segerstrom and my team,” Ocean View Coach Liberty McCollum said. “I don’t get it and I can’t figure it out, either. They say Westminster is our rival but I think otherwise. There’s always next year.”
