Angels power way past Tigers, 12-2

KEY MOMENT: The Angels led, 3-0, in the third inning, when C.J. Wilson lost touch with the strike zone. The Tigers had a runner on first and two out when Wilson walked consecutive batters, loading the bases for Miguel Cabrera. Wilson then hit Cabrera with a pitch, forcing home a run. But Wilson struck out Yoenis Cespedes and endured from there; the Angels led 3-1 at that point and 7-1 when he left after six innings.

AT THE PLATE: Albert Pujols hit his ninth home run of the season. Matt Joyce hit his third — and second in two nights. Joyce is batting .187 overall but .314 in his last 35 at-bats. And Chris Iannetta hit a grand slam, the first by an Angels catcher since Jeff Mathis in 2008. Johnny Giavotella hit his first major league triple since 2012 and first extra-base hit of any kind in 21 days.

ON THE MOUND: Wilson (3-3) gave up two hits in six innings for the victory, although he walked five and hit one. He threw 107 pitches, including 11 to Ian Kinsler in his first plate appearance and nine more to Kinsler in his second.

IN THE RECORD BOOK: Pujols’ home run was No. 529 of his career, five shy of Jimmie Foxx for 17th on the all-time list. He is four extra-base hits shy of Foxx and Ted Williams for 16th that all-time list and one run batted in shy of Chipper Jones for 31st on that list.

EXTRA BASES: Outfielder Kirk Nieuwenheis reported to the Angels on Thursday but was not in the starting lineup. The Angels designated first baseman/outfielder Marc Krauss for assignment, put outfielder Collin Cowgill (sprained wrist) on the disabled list and called up outfielder Alfredo Marte from triple-A Salt Lake. … C.J. Cron, demoted after hitting one home run in 98 at-bats for the Angels, hit two in his first seven at-bats for triple-A Salt Lake.
