Kendrick is back on disabled list

A second X-ray of Howie Kendrick’s left index finger Friday revealed a small fracture, an injury that sent the Angels second baseman to the disabled list for the second time this season.

Kendrick missed five weeks from mid-April to late May because of a broken bone on the back of his left hand, an injury suffered when he was hit by a pitch on April 17. He hurt the tip of his index finger swinging a bat during a game at Texas on July 3.

The finger was placed in a splint, and Kendrick was ordered to rest for at least 10 days, at which point another X-ray will be taken. No timetable was set for his return, but the Angels are confident Kendrick will be back by the end of July.

“I already had an injury to the same hand, and I had never broken any bones in my body before this year,” said Kendrick, who is batting .297 with four homers and 18 runs batted in. “It really stinks, but there’s nothing you can do about it. I just have to let it heal and get back out there as soon as possible.”

Kendrick’s injury marks the 16th time this season the Angels have used the disabled list. Erick Aybar, who filled in admirably during Kendrick’s first DL stint, is out for about six weeks after undergoing surgery to remove the hook of the hamate bone in his right wrist.

Maicer Izturis will probably get the bulk of the playing time at second, but Manager Mike Scioscia said he “may tap into the versatility” of third baseman Chone Figgins, who could also play some second.

The Angels will recall top third base prospect Brandon Wood, who was batting .261 with 15 homers and 54 RBIs at triple-A Salt Lake, to replace Kendrick on the roster.

“It’s going to test our depth,” Scioscia said. “We’ve absorbed a lot of injuries. We don’t have room to absorb more.”

The Angels agreed to terms Friday with top draft pick Jon Bachanov, a high school pitcher who received a $550,000 bonus and will report to the organization’s rookie league affiliate in Tempe, Ariz., today.

A 6-foot-5, 215-pound right-hander, Bachanov was 9-2 with an 0.37 earned-run average in 11 games, striking out 103 and walking 19 in 65 innings, for University High in Orlando, Fla., this season.

He was the 58th overall pick in the June draft, a compensation pick between the first and second rounds.

“I talked to the scouting director, and I feel like they’re going to take care of me,” said Bachanov, who attended Friday night’s game with several family members. “Some teams buy players; these guys develop pitchers, and they know how to win around here. It’s great.”

Bachanov, who didn’t emerge as a top prospect until this season, combines a lively 92-93-mph fastball with a power slider and changeup, and he could get bigger and stronger. His two older brothers are 6-9 and 6-7.

The Angels also announced the signings of seven additional players from the draft, including fifth-round pick Andrew Romine, an infielder from Arizona State; eighth-round pick Trevor Reckling, a high school pitcher from Irvington, N.J.; and ninth-round pick Gregory Mann, a high school outfielder from Virginia Beach, Va.

To make roster room for reliever Justin Speier, who was activated Friday after spending 2 1/2 months on the DL because of an intestinal infection, the Angels placed reliever Chris Resop, who has triceps tendinitis, on the 15-day DL.
