Dodgers’ Tim Wallach to interview for Red Sox’s managerial job

The Dodgers have granted third base coach Tim Wallach permission to interview for the Boston Red Sox’s managerial position. Wallach confirmed he has an interview scheduled, but wouldn’t say when it would take place.

“It’s the Red Sox,” Wallach said. “It’s one of the top organizations in all of baseball. We all know how last year went. It’s not a picture of who they are. They were a top organization for a long, long time. It’s certainly something I’m not afraid to be a part of.”

A five-time National League All-Star, Wallach has been the Dodgers third base coach for the last two seasons. Before that, he managed the organization’s triple-A affiliate in Albuquerque, where he was selected Pacific Coast League’s manager of the year in 2009. That same season, Baseball America selected him the league’s top managerial prospect.

Wallach believes the last two years have better prepared him to manage.

“On third, I’m always thinking about where we are in the game, who’s coming up,” he said. “It’s not the same as managing, but it is as close is it gets.”

The Red Sox were interested in Wallach last year, but a provision in his contract prevented him from interviewing for the job. The Red Sox hired Bobby Valentine, who guided them to a last-place finish in the American League East and was fired last week.

Wallach’s contract is about to expire. Wallach said he has spoken to the Dodgers about returning next season, something he would “absolutely” be interested in doing.
