Poor start dooms Dodgers in 8-4 loss to Giants

Share

San Francisco Giants 8, Dodgers 4

KEY MOMENT: With the Dodgers’ early 8-0 deficit cut in half, Hanley Ramirez stole second base with Adrian Gonzalez at the plate and no outs in the seventh inning. However, Giants Manager Bruce Bochy challenged and successfully overturned the safe call involving Ramirez at second base. Gonzalez struck out on the next pitch, ending any realistic chance at a comeback. The sequence marked the first time the expanded replay system was used in a Dodgers game.

BOX SCORE: Giants 8, Dodgers 4

AT THE PLATE: Gonzalez and Andre Ethier hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning. Matt Kemp, who made his season debut, doubled in Carl Crawford for his first run batted in. Kemp later scored on a single by Ethier, who now leads the Dodgers with five RBIs.

Only one Giants batter reached base after the second inning. That was Angel Pagan, who drew a sixth-inning walk off Withrow and was promptly caught stealing.

UP NEXT: Veteran left-hander Paul Maholm will pitch his first game for the Dodgers when he faces the Giants and left-hander Madison Bumgarner (0-0, 0.00) at Dodger Stadium at 1 p.m. On the air: TV: SportsNet LA. Radio: 570, 1020 (Spanish).
