Brett Hundley completes record season

SAN DIEGO — Brett Hundley’s first season running the UCLA offense became the best season a Bruins quarterback has had, at least statistically.

Hundley tossed a 22-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Fauria in the second quarter Thursday against Baylor in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl. It broke Cade McNown’s single-season record of 3,470 yards, set in 1998.

Hundley, a redshirt freshman, had already broken McNown’s total offense record and Drew Olson’s completion record. Hundley finished the season with 4,095 total yards, 3,740 yards passing and 318 completions.

“I thought he progressed nicely this season,” UCLA offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone said. “By midseason, he started to really grasp the offense. There is still some things he missed here and there, but he is getting better at it.”

Hundley has three seasons left to break career records, two if he declares for the NFL after his junior season. “I still think Brett has more,” Mazzone said. But, Mazzone added, “he is starting to take ownership of the offense, which is nice. I think the ‘ownership’ of the offense came a little quicker than I thought it would.”

Medical report

Tackle Simon Goines and receiver/running back Steven Manfro will both have surgery within the next two weeks.

Goines, a true freshman, started the first 13 games but was not in the lineup at the start against Baylor. He will have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, Coach Jim Mora said. He has played on a sore knee the last two months. It has forced him to leave games in the second half five times.

Manfro, a redshirt freshman, will have arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder. He has been bothered by the shoulder for much of the season. Manfro has 28 receptions for 287 yards and one touchdown.

Line woes

Goines entered the game in the second quarter, but the Bruins were in trouble along the offensive line — an area of limited depth — as the game progressed.

Tackle Torian White and center Jake Brendel left the game in the second with left ankle injuries. That caused quite a lot of shuffling along the line. That included using guard Brett Downey, who had not played in three months. Jeff Baca played tackle, guard and center at different points in the game.

Hundley was sacked five times in the first half and six times in the game.

Final count

Johnathan Franklin gained 34 yards in 14 carries Thursday. It left his single-season school record at 1,734 yards and his career record at 4,403 yards.

Eyes in the sky?

A San Diego Chargers spokesman said that he “imagined” John Spanos, the Chargers’ director of scouting, and Jimmy Raye, the team’s director of player personnel, were in attendance at the Holiday Bowl.

The question remains whether they would be there to scout players or a future coach.

Rumors abound that the Chargers are interested in Mora.

Goforth in

Randall Goforth started at safety for UCLA in place of Tevin McDonald, who was suspended this week for violating team policy.

Goforth was in the right spot in the second quarter, recovering a fumble that led to a UCLA touchdown.

Baylor tight end Jordan Najvar lost the ball when upended by linebacker Eric Kendricks.

Goforth recovered the ball at the 21-yard line. Two plays later, Hundley found Fauria down the middle for UCLA’s first score.
