Jansen blows save, but Dodgers rally in ninth for 7-6 win

KEY MOMENT: With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Arizona reliever Daniel Hudson issued back-to-back walks to Yasiel Puig and Adrian Gonzalez. Howie Kendrick then hit a walk-off single, completing the Dodgers’ sweep of the Diamondbacks.

AT THE PLATE: After a single, home run and double in his first three at-bats, Puig had two chances for the triple he needed to complete a cycle. He singled in the eighth inning and walked in the ninth, tying a career high with four hits.

ON THE MOUND: Dodgers starter Brett Anderson lasted five innings, giving up four runs and eight hits. He nonetheless would have won for the first time since May 8, had closer Kenley Jansen not blown his first save since Sept. 3. Jansen gave up a leadoff home run to Arizona’s A.J. Pollock in the ninth inning. Dodgers reliever Juan Nicasio left the game in the sixth inning because of a cracked nail on the middle finger of his right hand.

WHO’S ON THIRD? Third baseman Justin Turner (sore left knee) sat out his second consecutive start, but the Dodgers hope he can avoid the disabled list and return as soon as Friday. Cuban signee Hector Olivera is batting .278 through his first five professional games at double-A Tulsa, but Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman said the team has not yet assessed whether the 30-year-old Olivera is ready for the major leagues. “If we have a need, we’ll figure out if he is ready,” Friedman said, “but I don’t anticipate that with J.T.”

CALL TO ARMS: The Dodgers selected college pitchers with 20 of their 42 draft picks. The first two — Vanderbilt’s Walker Buehler and Louisville’s Kyle Funkhouser — could “provide starting pitching depth as soon as next year,” scouting director Billy Gasparino said. Of the Dodgers’ intended starting five this season, Clayton Kershaw is the only one who is not on the disabled list and is under club control for next year.
