Yasiel Puig gets it started with single in first Dodgers at-bat

And then the skies opened and cracked with thunder as the outfield light stand exploded and stardust seemed to fill the stadium air as Yasiel Puig —

No, wait. Not quite.

Which doesn’t mean Puig’s first major-league at-bat wasn’t a tad memorable.

The much ballyhooed Puig led off the bottom of the first Monday, flicked his powerful wrists at a 2-2 Eric Stults changeup and laced it into center for a basehit.

And thus it began. If wasn’t exactly a page out of “The Natural,” it was close enough. The crowd cheered admirably. Even when he was erased when Nick Punto bounced sharply into a double play and he strode back into the dugout.

Now he has his first baseball, of what the Dodgers hope will be many, to save.

Alas, in his second at-bat he bounced out to third. Which just about left him matching his .517 spring average.
