The Anaheim Ducks defeated the Winnipeg Jets, 4-2, with three goals in the third period of Game 1 in their Stanley Cup first-round playoff series. Here’s a look at three keys to the game.
1) Special teams
The Ducks were two for three on the power play and Corey Perry’s second goal, awarded after a video review, was shorthanded. “Today was the first time we really executed those things in a while,” Coach Bruce Boudreau said of the special-team coaching by assistant coaches Brad Lauer and Troy Yawney.
2) Third-period comebacks
As they did in the regular season, the Ducks saved their best for the last period of regulation time. They had outscored opponents, 85-71, in the third period of their 82 regular-season games. They outscored Winnipeg, 3-0, in the third period Thursday. During the regular season they recorded 18 victories in games they trailed during any point of the third period.
3) Vintage Corey Perry
The right winger’s two-goal, two-assist performance was vintage Perry. He was around the net, gritty, and refused to be stopped. Linemate Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and two assists. “Your best players have to be your best players and they were tonight,” Boudreau said.
