Pitcher Joey Phelps of Loyola has 20 strikeouts in 10 innings

Senior pitcher Joey Phelps of Loyola is off to a fantastic start. On Wednesday, he struck out nine and allowed one hit in five scoreless innings of the Cubs’ 8-4 win over Peninsula.

In 10 innings for the Cubs (5-0), he has struck out 20 and given up just two hits and no runs. Matt Costopoulos and Wyatt Nelson each had three hits.

Capistrano Valley 2, Damien 1: Eric Schumann struck out three and walked none in six innings for the Cougars.

Cerritos 5, Irvine Northwood 3: Cerritos scored three runs in the seventh to pull out the victory.

Esperanza 10, La Serna 5: Jason McDonnell had two hits and two RBIs for the Aztecs.

Trabuco Hills 3, St. Paul 2: Jason Bailey had a walk-off double in the eighth inning for Trabuco Hills.

Upland 3, Beckman 0: Tucker Juline threw a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts.

Tesoro 7, Riverside Poly 6: Ryan Flaherty hit a two-run home run and Nick Pinto contributed four hits.

El Camino Real 3, West Ranch 0: Adam Christopher and Jack Whisnant combined for the shutout.

Palos Verdes 7, South Torrance 2: Tyler Imbach hit a three-run home run and finished with four RBIs.
