Football: Official practice begins this week for Southern Section teams

Junior running back hasn’t played since freshman year

Southern Section campuses will start to get very busy this week as official football practice begins for schools with zero-week games at the end of August.

It will mark the return for two players who had to sit out last season because of medical issues, junior running back Leo Lambert III of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and senior running back Malik Roberson of Gardena Serra. Here’s the link to a column on their comeback and the challenges ahead.

Several schools, such as Crespi and Servite, took advantage of last week’s final summer activity to have players stay on campus overnight and practice without pads or helmets.

Loyola begins practice on Tuesday. Practicing twice-a-day becomes tricky because of a new state rule that limits practice to no more than 18 hours in a week.

Lots of teams will hold scrimmages against other teams the weekend of Aug. 21-22.

St. John Bosco and Huntington Beach Edison get a head start with games in Hawaii Aug. 22-23.
