Scrambling, running the option play and passing when needed, sophomore quarterback Tate Martell came off the bench late in the second quarter on Friday night and lifted Bishop Gorman to a 48-27 victory over Servite at Cerritos College.

He passed for 152 yards and three touchdowns. He ran for 110 yards. Servite never figured out what to do with him.

“At the end of the day, it was that quarterback who made the plays to win,” Servite Coach A.J. Gass said.

Bishop Gorman was leading, 7-6, late in the second quarter when Martell came in and led the Gaels (2-0) to six touchdown drives. Sophomore Tyjon Lindsey caught two touchdown passes and scored on a 92-yard punt return. He and Martell were freshmen last season at Poway High. Running back Russell Booze added three TD runs. Cordell Broadus had a 33-yard TD reception.

In defeat, Servite quarterback Travis Waller was magnificent. He completed 15 of 25 passes for 282 yards and one touchdown and ran for 138 yards in 17 carries and scored one touchdown.

“Waller is as good a football player as I’ve seen,” Bishop Gorman Coach Tony Sanchez said.
