The voice of Loyola football, John Malloy, is going down fighting

For 30 years, 72-year-old John Malloy has been the “Voice of the Cubs.”

He has been the public address announcer for Loyola High football home games since his oldest son was 17 years old. John graduated from Loyola in 1961.

His grandson, Jake Malloy, is a member of this season’s Pac-5 Division playoff team.

In recent years, Malloy has been battling cancer. He spent the summer receiving treatment with the goal of being healthy enough to announce this final season.

He made it through one game this season. It was Malloy’s final game announcing, and the final Loyola touchdown of the game was scored by his grandson, Jake.

There are many Loyola fans and community members who will always remember Malloy’s voice and enthusiasm through the years.

He comes from a sports family. His older sister was married to a CIF player of the year, Frank Layana. His brother-in-law was Jimmy McAnany, a Loyola grad who played for the Chicago White Sox.

His three sons, Emmett, Brendan and Justin, all played at Loyola and two have gone on to become award-winning directors. He also has two daughters. Hilary was a 1985 player of the year in volleyball.

“He is a legend in our community,” said daughter Coley Glasgow.
