Ducks trade May to Toronto

The Ducks traded winger Brad May to Toronto and Kings captain Dustin Brown got a ticket to Montreal -- but Brown’s is only for the NHL All-Star game.

May was sent to the Maple Leafs on Wednesday for a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2010 draft. The Ducks will get the pick only if May re-signs with Toronto.

Besides giving the Ducks salary-cap relief from May’s $600,000 hit, the move reunites May with former Ducks general manager Brian Burke, who traded for May when he was the GM in Anaheim and Vancouver. Burke wanted to add toughness to his lineup and the Ducks’ turn toward youth had squeezed out May, 37.

May, who had five assists in 20 games this season, is 37 games from the 1,000-game milestone. He has 126 goals, 285 points and 2,121 career penalty minutes.

Brown, the Kings’ captain, was one of 15 players added to the West All-Star team for the Jan. 25 game at the Bell Centre. It will be the first All-Star appearance for the bruising right wing, who’s among the NHL leaders with 141 hits.

“It’s obviously a great honor and I am excited to go and play in this game and to represent the Kings,” he said. “It should be a lot of fun and I am looking forward to the experience in Montreal.”

The San Jose Sharks will be represented by center Joe Thornton and defenseman Dan Boyle, and the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings will send defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom and center Pavel Datsyuk.

Also chosen were goaltenders Niklas Backstrom of the Minnesota Wild and Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks; defensemen Shea Weber of the Nashville Predators and Sheldon Souray of the Edmonton Oilers; centers Mike Modano of the Dallas Stars and Keith Tkachuk of the St. Louis Blues; left wing Rick Nash of the Columbus Blue Jackets, and right wings Jarome Iginla of the Calgary Flames, Milan Hejduk of the Colorado Avalanche, and Shane Doan of the Phoenix Coyotes.

Goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere, defenseman Scott Niedermayer and center Ryan Getzlaf of the Ducks are among the West starters. Additions to the East team will be announced today.
