AT THE PLATE: Much like Monday, when the Angels packed nine runs and 11 hits in the first four innings against Oakland, the Angels bunched all six of their runs and nine of their 10 hits in the first four innings against the White Sox. Albert Pujols, who started at designated hitter, walked and scored from second on a single in the first and doubled to left-center in the fourth. Jorge Cantu had two hits and two runs batted in, and outfield hopeful Kole Calhoun had two hits and an RBI.
ON THE MOUND: Three right-handers competing for the fifth rotation spot pitched, with Garrett Richards starting and giving up two runs and four hits in two innings, striking out one and walking one. Eric Hurley threw two scoreless innings, giving up one hit, striking out two and walking two. Trevor Bell threw two scoreless innings, giving up two hits, walking two and striking out one. Reliever Kevin Jepsen, who is coming back from surgery on his right knee, looked strong during a scoreless fifth, giving up one single and striking out two.
EXTRA BASES: Vernon Wells has drawn a walk in each of the two exhibition games. The left fielder drew walks in consecutive games only once last season, June 8 and 10 against Tampa Bay and Kansas City. Ryan Langerhans’ bid for a reserve outfield spot is off to a shaky start. He dropped a fly ball in shallow center Monday against Oakland and bobbled Brent Lillibridge’s double to left for an error that cost a run in the second inning Tuesday.
