Chicago White Sox closer David Robertson will miss at least three games after being placed on the bereavement list Thursday before a series opener at Baltimore because of the death of his father-in-law.

Robertson leads the American League with eight saves. He has an 0.87 earned-run average with 13 strikeouts and a .152 opponents’ batting average.

Chicago Manager Robin Ventura said Robertson has known for several days that it would be necessary for him to go on the bereavement list, but he did not want to leave the team short-handed.

“He handled it great,” Ventura said. “That’s as tough as the news is. He knew he was going to need three days. He was with us for a couple of days. He had already got the news.”
