Glen Davis tells Clippers he’ll sign with them
OKLAHOMA CITY — Free agent forward Glen Davis informed the Clippers on Sunday that he will sign with them.
Coach Doc Rivers said the deal wasn’t “official yet.”
“Hopefully it will be,” Rivers said.
Davis, who got a buyout from the Orlando Magic on Friday, cleared waivers at 2 p.m. West Coast time Sunday.
He will join the Clippers in New Orleans on Monday night for their game against the Pelicans or back in Los Angeles on Wednesday night for their game against the Houston Rockets.
Rivers talked about what it’ll be like for the Clippers to have a 6-foot-9, 289-pound player such as Davis.
“A guy similar to a guy like that, it just gives us another big,” Rivers said. “And what I like about a guy like that he can play the ‘five’ [center] or the ‘four’ [power forward]. And if we got a guy like that, he knows my system.”
Davis and Rivers were together for four years with the Boston Celtics, winning an NBA championship in 2008.
Davis will give the Clippers help in the front court as a backup to Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan.
With the Magic, he averaged 12.1 points and 6.3 rebounds in 30.1 minutes per game.
San Antonio, Miami, Golden State, Chicago and Brooklyn all tried to get Davis.
The Clippers now have a 13-man roster, leaving room to sign two more players.
They will monitor the situation with small forward Danny Granger, who reportedly is seeking a buyout from the Philadelphia 76ers. Granger was acquired from the Indiana Pacers on Thursday on the last day trades could be made.
The Clippers feel as if Granger could help them, possibly even as a starter.
Barnes at ease
Matt Barnes sat on the Clippers’ team plane Thursday not knowing if he was going to Memphis for a game against the Grizzlies or if he was going to be traded on the last day of the deadline.
Barnes wasn’t traded, finally putting his mind at ease.
It showed in how he played Sunday against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Barnes had 24 points, with a season-high six three-pointers.
“I think I know my days are numbered here,” Barnes said. “So I’m going to go out here and have fun and play as hard as I can and help the team in any way..
“I think I was thinking too much, trying to read into trades. The writing is out there.”
Barnes, who injured both his ankles in the fourth quarter, had the assignment of defending Kevin Durant, who finished with 42 points and 10 assists.
“He’s not someone you stop one-on-one,” Barnes said. “Even teams don’t stop him. You just want to make him take tough shots.”
