College football bottom 10: Hokies make their move

What’s all this talk about Virginia Wreck (0-2) being eliminated from national title contention?

OK, so maybe the Hokies can kiss goodbye the Associated Press’ Top 25 poll, which had them ranked No. 10 before the season began. But, off their stunning 16-21 loss to James Madison on Saturday, the Hokies are a prime candidate to make it to the Bottom Ten championship game, tentatively set for Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Their opponent could be New Mexico (0-2). The Lobos gave up 52 points to Texas Tech on Saturday and actually lowered their points-allowed average — to 62 a game. The week before they gave up 72 to Oregon.

Poor Minnehaha, a 38-41 loser to South Dakota. The Gophers, a friendly, law-abiding bunch who have been penalized just 66 yards this season, next meet out-of-control USC. The Trojans, the NCAA’s version of the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang, have been penalized more yards (240) than any other major college team. They should wear stripes, not the refs.
