Dodgers beat Arizona, 1-0, on Yasmani Grandal’s homer in 13th

KEY MOMENT: Left-hander J.P. Howell made a behind-the-back tag to prevent Jordan Pacheco from scoring on a pitch in the dirt that bounced away in the top of the 13th inning, setting up a game-winning home run by catcher Yasmani Grandal in the bottom of the inning. The walk-off homer was the first of Grandal’s career.

ON THE MOUND: Brett Anderson pitched his best game in the five starts he’s made for the Dodgers, tossing six shutout innings in which he allowed five hits and no walks. Anderson, who failed to complete five innings in either of his previous two starts, said, “It was a good stepping stone for the starts to come.” The left-hander said he sensed he was on the verge of something like this after his last game, when he gave up three runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings against the San Francisco Giants. “Even though my last outing wasn’t great, I could see where my stuff was progressing,” he said. “The hits weren’t hard, they were seeing-eye singles. I could see the light at the end of the tunnel.” After Anderson departed from the game, seven Dodgers relievers combined to pitch seven scoreless innings. Howell was credited with the victory.

AT THE PLATE: The Dodgers were limited to five hits in the first 12 innings. Arizona starter Chase Anderson held them to two hits over six innings. Andre Ethier was two for four with a double and a walk. Howie Kendrick also had a double. Juan Uribe extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a fifth-inning single.

EXTRA BASES: Yasiel Puig ran under the supervision of trainers for the second consecutive day and remains on track to play in minor league games “later in the week,” Manager Don Mattingly said. . . . If Hyun-Jin Ryu emerges from a bullpen session Monday without any problems, he will throw to hitters later in the week. . . . Brandon League threw off a mound for the first time since he was shut down near the end of spring training with shoulder problems. . . . Joel Peralta’s condition isn’t improving, Mattingly said. Peralta is on the disabled list with nerve-related issues. . . . Right-hander Scott Baker, who started two games for the Dodgers, was designated for assignment. His place on the 40-man roster was taken by infielder Andy Wilkins, whom the Dodgers purchased from the Toronto Blue Jays. Wilkins was designated for assignment last week. The 26-year-old hit 30 home runs last season for triple-A Charlotte, a Chicago White Sox affiliate.
