Kings beat Washington Capitals, 3-1, for their fourth win in a row

What you had were the usual suspects joined by the two unfamiliar names, of late, on the goal-scoring ledger, adding up to a workable mix of offense for the Kings.

Finally, the 70s trio — Dwight King, Jeff Carter and Tyler Toffoli — got plenty of supplemental support in the Kings’ fourth straight victory, which happens to be their second-longest winning streak of the season.

Forward Trevor Lewis’ and center Jarret Stoll’s third-period goals lifted the Kings to a 3-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on Saturday night at Staples Center. King had the other goal for the Kings, scoring his 10th of the season, assisted by linemates Toffoli and Carter.

King has scored in three straight games, a career high, and Toffoli has seven points in the last four games. Carter, who leads the Kings with 42 points, has six points in the last three games, including four assists in the last two.

“I think Carts’ line has been scoring all the goals for us the past few games,” Lewis said. “It’s nice to chip in and to get Stolly’s line to chip in, too. Hopefully we can keep that going.”

For the Kings, it was a welcome bounce back after a humbling loss at Washington earlier this month. The Capitals beat the lackluster Kings, 4-0, on Feb. 3.

The game represented a career high in scoring for Lewis, who recorded his seventh of the season, and his first goal since Dec. 22 against Calgary. Lewis made it 2-0 just 17 seconds into the third period, taking a pass from linemate Marian Gaborik and beating Capitals goalie Braden Holtby with a backhander.

“It was a bouncing puck, and I was just hoping for it to bounce over the guy’s stick because I knew Gabby would have him with his speed.

“I really didn’t even have to say anything to Gabby. I was there and he just made a great play, sliding it over to me and I had the goalie going the other way. It was a great play by Gabby.”

Still, the long scoring drought didn’t impact other parts of his game.

“I’m just trying not to push the goal-scoring too hard because that’s when you lose your detail and the defensive side of things,” Lewis said. “And I think that’s a big part of my game. I was working hard and still getting some chances. I knew they were bound to go in at some point.”

Lewis climbed out of a longer scoring drought than Stoll. But Stoll’s goal, his first since Jan. 19 against Calgary, at 7:09 of the third, relieved some pressure and gave the Kings another two-goal cushion, making it 3-1, off a redirection of Dustin Brown’s pass through traffic.

Earlier, when it was four-on-four, Washington star Alex Ovechkin had cut the Kings’ lead to 2-1 with his blast past Kings goalie Jonathan Quick from the left circle at 1:55 of the third.

Eventually, Ovechkin would ignite. This was his 34th goal of the season. Since Dec. 18, he has not gone more than one game without scoring. He didn’t score at San Jose on Feb. 11, finishing with one assist, so it figured he would rebound.

It just took him until the third period.

The Kings had not won four straight games since the first month of the season, when they recorded six consecutive wins in October. That winning streak started on Oct. 12 against the Winnipeg Jets and ended on Oct. 28 with an overtime loss at Philadelphia.
