LSU football players booked in bar fight case

Louisiana State quarterback Jordan Jefferson and teammate Joshua Johns were released on $5,000 bond each Friday in connection with a bar fight that injured four people.

The two players turned themselves in to authorities in Baton Rouge after police obtained arrest warrants on felony charges of second-degree battery, stemming from their alleged roles in a fight outside Shady’s bar in Baton Rouge on Aug. 19. The players also have been suspended indefinitely by the school.

Baton Rouge Police Chief Dewayne White said the evidence in the case would be forwarded to the East Baton Rouge Parish district attorney for review.

Jefferson, a starter, and Johns, a reserve linebacker, will miss fourth-ranked LSU’s season opener on Sept. 3 against Oregon at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. They could miss many more games than that.

A police report says a 19-year-old woman named Victoria Long said she witnessed several LSU players beating one of the alleged victims and saw Jefferson kick that man in the face.

Barry Bonds’ obstruction of justice conviction was upheld Friday by a federal judge, who denied the former baseball star’s motion for a new trial or acquittal on the charge.

A day after hearing oral arguments, U.S. District Judge Susan Illston refused to overturn the only unanimous decision reached by the jury in her courtroom last April 13.

Jurors failed to reach a verdict on three counts charging the seven-time NL MVP with making false statements to a grand jury in 2003 when he denied receiving steroids and human growth hormone from trainer Greg Anderson, and when he said he allowed only doctors to inject him. Prosecutors have not yet said whether they plan to retry him on those counts.

Bonds is likely to appeal Illston’s decision to the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Kyle Busch wins NASCAR Nationwide race at Bristol

Kyle Busch edged teammate Joey Logano at the finish line at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee to become the all-time winningest driver in Nationwide Series.

The win was the 50th of Busch’s career in NASCAR’s second-tier series and broke a tie the 26-year-old had with Mark Martin.

Ryan Newman has won the pole for Saturday night’s Sprint Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Newman turned a lap at 122.811 mph in Friday’s qualifying session to put his Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet in the top starting spot.

Former NBA player Javaris Crittenton, who was once suspended by the league after an altercation with then-teammate Gilbert Arenas over guns in a team locker room, has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a woman on an Atlanta street, police said late Friday.

Police secured a murder warrant for the arrest of Crittenton, who played at Georgia Tech, in connection with the shooting death of 22-year-old Jullian Jones on Aug. 19, police said. Police said Crittenton is not in custody and is wanted.

Jones, a mother of four, was walking with a group of people on the city’s southwest side when a dark-colored SUV drove by and she was shot by someone inside the vehicle, police said.

Fourth-seeded John Isner upset top-seeded Andy Roddick, 7-6 (7), 6-4, in the Winston-Salem Open in North Carolina.

Isner will play qualifier Julien Benneteau, who defeated 10th-seeded Robin Haase, 3-6, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (6) in the other semifinal.

Three-time defending champion Caroline Wozniacki kept her unbeaten streak at Yale alive, topping Francesca Schiavone, 7-6 (2) 6-3 in the semifinals of the New Haven Open

Wozniacki will play Czech qualifier Petra Cetkovska in Saturday’s final. Cetkovska French Open champion Li Na in a dramatic third-set tiebreaker 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (9).

The San Jose Sharks signed forward Logan Couture to a two-year, $5.75-million contract extension through the 2013-14 season. Couture, 22, was a finalist last season for the Calder Trophy, which goes to the NHL’s top rookie.

Brigham Young University has reinstated junior center Brandon Davies after a six-month suspension from the basketball team and university.

Davies was suspended in March because of violations of the school’s honor code. Students are prohibited from having premarital sex or drinking alcoholic beverages, among other rules.
