Andy Murray cruises at Rogers Cup

Olympic men’s champion Andy Murray won his opening match in the Rogers Cup on Wednesday, beating Italy’s Flavio Cipolla, 6-1, 6-3, at Toronto.

Murray, the second-seeded British star who beat Roger Federer on Sunday in London for the gold medal, set up a third-round match against Canada’s Milos Raonic.

“I felt OK this morning when I practiced and decided to give it a go,” Murray said. “I feel a little sore in the joints and stuff a little bit. I mean I feel tired mentally. I haven’t really slept much in the last few days, so that’s probably catching up to me a little bit.

“But I hit the ball pretty well. After playing for eight weeks on grass pretty much, it’s very different here. The ball is very quick compared with Wimbledon. It also bounces much higher. The court is much slower as well. So there are a lot of things to change.”

Raonic beat Murray in the Barcelona semifinals nearly four months ago.

Raonic advanced Tuesday.

Top-seeded Novak Djokovic also won, beating Bernard Tomic, 6-2, 6-3. Djokovic won the event in 2007 and 2011.

In other second-round matches, fourth-seeded Tomas Berdych defeated Julien Benneteau, 6-7 (10), 6-4, 6-4; Jeremy Chardy upset third-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6-4, 7-6 (4); fifth-seeded Janko Tipsarevic beat Mikhail Youzhny, 7-6 (2), 6-4; Radek Stepanek topped sixth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro, 6-4, 7-6 (5); Tommy Haas defeated ninth-seeded Gilles Simon, 6-2, 6-3; and Sam Querrey got past No. 13 Kei Nishikori, 6-2, 6-3.

Maria Sharapova withdrew from the Rogers Cup at Montreal because of a stomach ailment.

The second-ranked Sharapova told organizers she picked up the bug at the London Olympics, where she lost the final to Serena Williams. Sharapova was replaced in the draw by Galina Voskoboeva.

In second-round matches, eighth-seeded Sara Errani defeated Jana Cepelova, 6-3, 6-2, and 16th-seeded Lucie Safarova edged Sesil Karatantcheva, 6-4, 6-4.

In first-round play, 18-year-old Canadian Eugenie Bouchard defeated Shahar Peer, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Americans Christina McHale and Varvara Lepchenko also won first-round matches.

Cavaliers sign free agent Miles

The Cleveland Cavaliers signed free agent C.J. Miles.

Miles, 25, a guard and forward, averaged 9.1 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 20.5 minutes per game last season for Utah. He scored a season-high 27 points in 27 minutes off the bench in a Jazz win over Houston on Feb. 29.

The 6-foot-6, 222-pound Miles was selected from Skyline High in Dallas by Utah in the second round of the 2005 draft.

Miles has career averages of 8.4 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 19.3 minutes in 389 games.

Joey Logano is considering offers for two full-time Sprint Cup rides next year, including one to remain at Joe Gibbs Racing, and expects to make a decision soon, ESPN.com reported.

“I’ve got a couple of offers,” the 22-year-old driver said at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., where he was promoting fall events.

“I’m just trying to decipher what’s the best for me I could be fairly close [to a decision]. I could be a few weeks out. It all depends on the next couple of days, actually.”

Logano is in the final year of his contract in the No. 20 Toyota at Gibbs Racing.

Pete Pedersen, a longtime steward in California who was given the horse racing industry’s highest honor, has died at 92.

Santa Anita racing officials said in a statement Wednesday that Pedersen died over the weekend because of complications suffered from a recent fall at his home.

He worked for more than 60 years in various positions and presided over some of the industry’s most prestigious events, including the inaugural Breeders’ Cup in 1984 at Hollywood Park.

He was given the Eclipse Award of Merit in 2002. Three years later, he retired.
