Jim Leyland will return as manager of Tigers

Jim Leyland is returning next year as manager of the Detroit Tigers.

The team and its manager quickly ended any remaining speculation about his status by announcing Tuesday that Leyland’s contract was extended through 2013. He managed on a one-year deal this year and led the Tigers to the World Series, in which they were swept by the San Francisco Giants.

The team said Leyland’s coaching staff also has been invited to return.

Next season will be Leyland’s 22nd as a major league manager and his eighth in Detroit. He has led the Tigers to the postseason three times and the World Series twice.

Pitcher Jake Peavy and the Chicago White Sox agreed to a $29-million, two-year contract.

The right-hander will receive $14.5 million in each of the next two seasons. The 31-year-old Peavy could receive a $15-million option for 2015, depending on his innings pitched during the next two years.

The 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner was 11-12 with a 3.37 earned-run average in 32 starts this year after three injury-riddled seasons.

Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen and San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley are among nine players who won Gold Gloves for the first time.

The awards for fielding excellence were presented Tuesday night by Rawlings.

Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy also was in the first-time group. The Orioles were the only team with three winners, with center fielder Adam Jones and catcher Matt Wieters also being picked by major league managers and coaches.

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina and New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira each won for the fifth time.

Sermanni to coach U.S. women’s soccer

U.S. Soccer chose veteran Australia coach Tom Sermanni to replace Pia Sundhage as leader of the women’s national team.

Sermanni, a 58-year-old from Glasgow, Scotland, led Australia to three World Cups in his 11 years as coach and guided the team into the top 10 in FIFA’s world rankings. Sundhage, who won two Olympic titles and a World Cup silver medal in her five years with the U.S. program, resigned last summer to return to her native Sweden, where she will coach that country’s national team.

Amare Stoudemire could be sidelined for two months, the second straight season the New York Knicks forward will miss significant time because of injury.

The Knicks said Stoudemire would have left knee surgery and could be out six to eight weeks, more than twice as long as originally estimated when he was hurt during the exhibition season.

Point guard Ty Lawson signed a four-year, $48-million extension with the Denver Nuggets. A team spokesman told the Associated Press that Lawson had signed the extension, and the Denver Post reported it was worth $48 million.

Caroline Wozniacki and Roberta Vinci had easy straight-set victories in their first round-robin matches in the season-ending Tournament of Champions at Sofia, Bulgaria.

The top-seeded Wozniacki defeated Hsieh Su-Wei of Taiwan, 6-2, 6-2, in 60 minutes, and it took Vinci five minutes longer to rout Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova, 6-1, 6-2.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga reached the third round of the Paris Masters with a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (2) win over Julien Benneteau.

The 2008 champion needed nearly 2 1/2 hours to get past Benneteau and was forced into a final-set tiebreaker after failing to serve out the match.

Earlier, qualifier Jerzy Janowicz of Poland pulled off another upset when he beat 13th-seeded Marin Cilic, 7-6 (6), 6-2, to set up a potential third-round match against U.S. Open champion Andy Murray.

Former Louisiana State quarterback Jordan Jefferson reported to a Louisiana jail after a judge revoked his bond in a 2011 simple battery case.

The judge’s action follows Jefferson’s arrest last week with three other ex-players whom police say they found with marijuana in an apartment.
