Roger Federer gets a 6-0, 6-0 win in Germany

Roger Federer cruised past Mischa Zverev, 6-0, 6-0, to reach the Gerry Weber Open semifinals on Friday at Halle, Germany, recording his second career double bagel and teaching a painful lesson to a player trying to serve and volley on grass.

Richard Gasquet also made the last four, defeating Florian Mayer, 6-3, 7-6 (4). Gasquet will play Mikhail Youzhny, who upset 2011 champion Philipp Kohlschreiber, 6-3, 6-2.

The third-ranked Federer needed only 39 minutes to defeat the 156th-ranked Zverev. Federer got his first blanking against Gaston Gaudio at the 2005 Masters Cup in Shanghai.

“It’s not something which is easy to do. You never go into a match aiming for that score,” Federer said. “I was very surprised that it happened today, especially on grass.”

Lleyton Hewitt reached his first semifinals in 11 months by upsetting third-seeded Juan Martin del Potro, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, at Queen’s Club in London.

Hewitt will next play No. 5 seed and defending champion Marin Cilic, who upset No. 2 Tomas Berdych, 7-5, 7-6 (4).

Daniela Hantuchova rallied from a set and 4-1 down to beat former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone and advance to the semifinals of the grass-court Aegon Classic. Hantuchova won, 6-7 (8), 6-4, 7-6 (3), to record another upset in a rainy week at the Wimbledon warmup tournament in Birmingham, England.

Andrea Petkovic reached her first WTA final since October 2011, upsetting top-seeded Jelena Jankovic. 6-4, 6-3, at Nuremberg, Germany. In Saturday’s final, Petkovic will play seventh-seeded Simona Halep, who beat fifth-seeded Lucie Safarova, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2.

ETC.: Edwards wins pole in Michigan

Carl Edwards has topped qualifying for the first time this season with a lap of 202.452 mph at Michigan International Speedway.

Edwards was given the pole in May at Talladega as well, but that was because qualifying was rained out and the field was set by practice speeds. He’s second in the Sprint Cup standings.

Kurt Busch was second in qualifying, followed by Kasey Kahne. Points leader Jimmie Johnson was 17th.

A person familiar with the negotiations says a “framework” is in place for a lease agreement that would keep the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes in Arizona.

But while the person characterized the developments as positive, the Glendale City Council still must study the proposal and vote on it. The next council meeting is set for June 25 and the NHL Board of Governors meets two days later.

Wide receiver Victor Cruz has signed his $2.879 million tender with the New York Giants. Had the 26-year-old Cruz not signed before Monday, the Giants’ offer could have been reduced to $630,000 for the 2013 season. The Giants could have matched any offers Cruz received from other teams.

Paynter, a top 3-year-old colt last year who became seriously ill with health issues, made a trimphant return at Betfair Hollywood Park in his first race as a 4-year-old.

Paynter won a seven-furlong allowance feature by 4 1/2 lengths. “He is just an incredible, phenomenal horse,’ ” trainer Bob Baffert said. “I can’t believe he is back.”

Paynter finished second in last year’s Belmont Stakes.

England’s Robert Dinwiddie shot a five-under-par 66 for a share of the lead with South Africa’s Tjaart Van der Walt after the second round of the European Tour’s Najeti Hotels Open at Saint-Omer, France.

Dinwiddie had a bogey-free round to join Van der Walt, the first-round leader, at four-under 138. Van der Walt had a 71.
