The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to trade former USC quarterback Matt Barkley to the Arizona Cardinals. The news was first reported in a tweet by Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the trade was for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2016 that would become a sixth-round selection if Barkley is on the Cardinals’ roster for six or more games.

The move by the Eagles would appear to open the door for Tim Tebow to make the team. He had been battling with Barkley for the third quarterback spot behind Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez.

The trade comes a day after Tebow outplayed Barkley in Philadelphia’s final preseason game. The former Heisman Trophy-winning Florida quarterback threw for 189 yards on 11 of 19 passing with two touchdowns and an interception while Barkley completed a pedestrian four of nine passes for 45 yards. Barkley also tossed an interception.

During the preseason, Tebow was 21 of 36 for 286 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Barkley completed 27 of 52 passes for 351 yards. He did not have a touchdown, but did toss two interceptions.

Barkley will join former Trojans’ Heisman Trophy award winner Carson Palmer on the Arizona depth chart. The Cardinals reportedly cut quarterbacks Logan Thomas and Philip Sims on Friday, leaving Barkley probably behind Drew Stanton as Palmer’s backup.

Barkley was selected out of USC by the Eagles in the 2013 draft with the first pick of the fourth round but has never seen significant action. He played in three games his rookie season, throwing 30 completions in 49 attempts for 300 yards. He threw four interceptions and has yet to record an NFL touchdown.
