Oklahoma’s Peterson Probably Out for Year

A joyous occasion quickly turned bleak for Adrian Peterson of Oklahoma when he suffered a broken collarbone on a dive into the end zone Saturday in a 34-9 victory over Iowa State at Norman, Okla.

Peterson, a junior, was having a spectacular game in front of his father, who recently was released from prison and was watching his son play football in person for the first time since before Adrian was in high school.

Peterson was injured at the end of a 53-yard scoring run with about 6 minutes 40 seconds left in the game. He finished with 183 yards and two touchdowns.

“Just diving into the end zone and when he landed, he landed wrong,” Oklahoma Coach Bob Stoops said. “At this point it looks like the best thing, the earliest he would be ready to play, would be a bowl game.”

Peterson had six consecutive 100-yard rushing games and was the key component on offense for Oklahoma.

“A.D. is the focal point not only of this offense but the team,” Sooners quarterback Paul Thompson said.

Peterson set an NCAA freshman record with 1,925 yards rushing in 2004, when he was runner-up to Matt Leinart for the Heisman Trophy and Oklahoma advanced to the Bowl Championship Series title game.

His performance Saturday moved him into fourth place on Oklahoma’s all-time rushing list. He is 150 yards behind 1978 Heisman Trophy winner Billy Sims’ 4,118 yards.
