Brett Stegmaier takes the lead at PGA event in Las Vegas

Brett Stegmaier topped the leaderboard Friday in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in only his fifth career start on the PGA Tour.

The 32-year-old former University of Florida player was six under for the round and 11 under overall with three holes left when second-round play was suspended because of darkness. He will resume play Saturday morning with a 14-foot birdie putt on the par-4 seventh.

Stegmaier eagled the par-five 16th on his opening nine and had four birdies on the 15 holes he was able to finish at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. He earned a tour card in the Web.com Tour Finals series.

Former UNLV player Chad Campbell was a stroke back along with Morgan Hoffmann and Tyler Aldridge. The 41-year-old Campbell had a 4-under 67. He won the last of his four PGA Tour titles in 2007.

Hoffmann shot a 66, and Aldridge had a 68.

Aldridge birdied three of the last four holes, hitting a 134-yard shot to inches on the par-four 18th.

U.S. Presidents Cup player Jimmy Walker topped the group at 9 under after a 67. Rickie Fowler followed his opening 72 with a 65 to reach 5 under. He eagled the par-5 13th in a back-nine 30.

Ji Eun-hee leads LPGA Taiwan Championship

Ji Eun-hee took a one-stroke lead over Lydia Ko in the LPGA Taiwan Championship in Taipei, overcoming back pain and a double bogey in windy and rainy conditions.

The 29-year-old South Korean player finished with a three-under 69 to reach 9-under 135 at Miramar. She made the double bogey on the par-five sixth after hitting hooking her drive out of bounds, rallied with birdies on Nos. 9-11 and closed with seven straight pars. Ji won the 2008 LPGA Championship and 2009 U.S. Women’s Open, both majors, for her lone LPGA Tour titles.

The second-ranked Ko birdied the par-5 18th for a 67. The 18-year-old New Zealander is trying to regain the No. 1 spot in the world from South Korea’s Inbee Park, the winner last year at Miramar. Park is skipping her title defense to play in a Korea LPGA event, where she dropped into a tie for seventh Friday.

England’s Charley Hull and China’s Lin Xi-yu, both 19, were tied for third at 7 under. Hull shot a 69, and Lin had a 70.

Rose’s 66 good for lead at Hong Kong Open

England’s Justin Rose shot a four-under 66 in the Hong Kong Open to take a one-stroke lead over Denmark’s Lucas Bjerregaard.

Rose had a nine-under 131 total in the event sanctioned by the European and Asian tours. Bjerregaard also had a 66.

England’s Ian Poulter and Taiwan’s Lu Wei-chih were tied for third at seven under. Poulter had a 66, and Lu shot 69.

Poulter got a late spot in the field when American Rich Beem generously gave up his sponsor exemption, allowing Poulter to reach the reach the minimum 13 events on the European Tour to keep his membership and be eligible for the Ryder Cup. Poulter had expected to play in the HSBC Champions in Shanghai in two weeks, but lost a spot there when he dropped out of the top 50 in the world ranking Monday.

American Patrick Reed was 3 under after a 69, and Dustin Johnson missed the cut with rounds of 69 and 72.
