Racing! So who’s got the best shot to win the Kentucky Derby?

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we debut another feature.

The success of this newsletter is due to all of the contributors who offer their thoughts and opinions on a regular basis. Today, we are going to add a weekly Kentucky Derby ranking, provided by Jon White, who also does the morning line at Santa Anita and is a historian of the sport.

If you recall in Thursday’s newsletter we ran down the folks who vote in the NTRA poll of 3-year-olds. White is one of the three California voters who went with Good Magic first. Yet he has McKinzie first in this, his first Kentucky Derby top 10 of the season.

He explains what seems to be a contradiction this way:

“My top 10 is a ranking of who I believe has the best chance to win the Kentucky Derby. The NTRA 3-year-old poll is different. As the NTRA poll states, it is a current ranking of the top 3-year-old.

“In my view, Good Magic deserves to be ranked as the top 3-year-old at this point because he was the Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old male. That is why I went with Good Magic first in that poll. But if you ask me right now who I think has the best chance to win the Kentucky Derby, my answer is McKinzie. My ranking in the NTRA poll is based largely on what a horse has accomplished. My Kentucky Derby top 10 reflects, from top to bottom, my ranking of how I see the chances of a horse to win that particular race.”

OK, that explains it. Now, let’s look at Jon’s Top 10.

  1. McKinzie
  1. Instilled Regard
  1. Good Magic
  1. Bolt d'Oro
  1. Mask
  1. Solomini
  1. Enticed
  1. Untamed Domain
  1. Catholic Boy
  1. Firenze Fire

I’m thinking Firenze Fire will move up or out as he runs on Saturday in the Withers Stakes at Aqueduct. Firenze Fire has beaten Good Magic but that was around one turn. He should be the favorite.

Another Kentucky Derby points race on Saturday will be the Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream. Enticed, Jon’s No. 7 horse, will likely be the favorite in this race. Enticed won the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in a rough and tumble race that saw a rider get unseated.

There is one more points race on Saturday and that is the Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita. No one in Jon’s Top 10 is running in the race but a strong performance by any of the nine entered could change that. Shivermetimbers for Jerry Hollendorfer is the likely favorite.

There is pretty much at least one point-bearing Derby prep every weekend up until the final major prep weekends in April. Next week is the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs.

Santa Anita review

Thursday’s feature was won by Pantsonfire with a late rally to win the 1 1/8-mile turf allowance. She won the race by 3/4 length over Causeforcommotion for trainer Richard Baltas and jockey Rajiv Maragh. As the favorite, she paid $5.80, $3.00 and $2.60.

“That’s her style and we didn’t want to change too much,” Maragh told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. “I was pretty confident in her ability and that’s the way she wants to run.”

Bombilate finished third.

Santa Anita preview

If you like watching the only right-turn in U.S. racing there are three races down the 6½-furlong hillside turf course at Santa Anita on Friday. The third race is a maiden claimer for 3-year-olds, the fifth is for Cal-breds 4 and up and carries the day’s high purse of $56,000 and the eighth is a claimer for fillies and mares 4 and up.

But the most interesting race and the second of the boutique races that Santa Anita boss Tim Ritvo has ordered to try and help small trainers and owners. It’s for 3-year-old maidens over 1 1/16 miles and restricted to homebreds and horses sold at public auction for $100,000 or less.

It’s another valiant attempt by Ritvo to try and help racing in Southern California. The first boutique race, for trainers with 20 or fewer horses in their barn, turned out controversial. The language around the race was not very precise and is now in the hands of the California Horse Racing Board to determine eligibility.

There is very little language to this race in the overnight program, but we’re hoping the condition book has everything in order with no loopholes.

The field sizes for Friday are OK with only one six-horse race. The numbers, in order are: 7, 8, 9, 6, 9, 9, 9, 10.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

SIXTH RACE No. 9 Heartfullofstars (4-1)

Sophomore newcomer from the Phil D'Amato barn made three starts at Parx and showed steady improvement each time, including a good runner-up try last time when well clear of the third horse. His action indicates he should like a route of ground but will have to overcome the outside post.

Thursday Result: The Tulip appeared to be moving well on the far turn but suddenly lost her action (slipped?) into the stretch and was not persevered with through the lane.

Los Alamitos one-day preview

I’ve decided to leave this weekly segment in the hands of Orlando Gutierrez, marketing and media maven at Los Al. So, take it away, Orlando.

“The aptly named Blink Of An Eye Stakes on Friday night will highlight the only live racing card this weekend at Los Alamitos. There will be eight races with a modest Pick 6 carryover of $3,586 starting in the third race.

“The Blink Of An Eye is a 100-yard dash, which means the race lasts less than seven seconds. So, don’t blink. The competition is tough as Grade 1 caliber stakes runners such as Kolleen Ledgerwood’s Renewed and Spackman Racing and Lin Melton’s Maggie Durant will use this race as a way to sharpen their quickness for later in the year. Renewed enjoyed a solid campaign in 2017, qualifying for four major derbies. He was second in the Grade 3 PCQHRA Breeders Derby and also ran in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Super Derby and Grade 2 Southern California Derby. Maggie Durant won the Grade 3 California Breeders Matron Stakes at 400 yards and she has a win over males at 100 yards on Dec. 15. The horse to beat is Cesar Dabdoub’s 4-year-old Ima Leonidas after a decisive half-length victory at 100 yards on Jan. 14.

Los Alamitos will close its track for renovation after the morning workouts on Saturday, and will reopen the track on Thursday morning. Live night racing will resume next Friday. Bobby Neuman, the track announcer at Los Alamitos during its daytime thoroughbred meets, will be on the microphone when the racing resumes in place of the vacationing Ed Burgart.

Ed Burgart L.A. play of the day

SEVENTH RACE: No.4 California Blossom (6-1)

She was bumped back sharply at the start of last sixth-place try against stronger and had plenty of run in reserve thereafter. She faced stakes company in two prior starts and has upset look with two-level class drop here.
