London Olympics: What to watch for on Saturday

Share

There are seemingly thousands of Olympic events every day. Here is what to watch for on Saturday:

TRACK AND FIELD

The relays take the stage on the last day of competition. The U.S. was a strong qualifier in both the women’s 4 X 400 and men’s 4 X 100. Sanya Richards Ross will anchor the women’s 1,600-meter race. The star of the men’s race will be Jamaica’s Usain Bolt, arguably the biggest star at the Games. Other finals include the women’s 800 meters and women’s high jump.

BASKETBALL

The women’s gold gets decided and it’s difficult to imagine it being anyone but the U.S. France is the surprise opponent going through its side of the draw 7-0. But the U.S. has won 40 straight games and has a margin of victory of 34.1 points. This is only the second Games France has had a women’s team in the tournament.

SOCCER

Favored Brazil is playing in the men’s gold-medal match for the first time since 1988. And Mexico is looking for its first-ever gold. The Brazilian team is young and likely to be the same team four years from now when the Games are in Rio. Mexico won the last meeting between these teams in a game played in the U.S. Mexico has beaten Brazil six of 12 times since 1999.

VOLLEYBALL

It should be quite a match as the U.S. women and Brazil play for the gold medal. It is a revenge game for the U.S. as Brazil beat them in the final in 2008 in Beijing. However, the U.S. team is much improved as it has won the World Grand Prix each of the last three years. Brazil beat Japan to get to the final and the U.S. beat South Korea.
