IRVING, Texas _ The Dallas Cowboys added more defensive line depth Tuesday, signing defensive end/ defensive tackle David Irving off the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad.tmpplchld Irving, 22, takes the open roster spot created when the team waived defensive tackle Davon Coleman on Monday. The Cowboys also brought back defensive end Lavar Edwards to their practice squad, releasing guard Ronald Patrick.tmpplchld The Cowboys must have Irving on their 53-man roster for three weeks, which shouldn’t be an issue. They are short on D-linemen right now, and Irving is willing to play wherever the Cowboys want him to.tmpplchld “Nose tackle, 3-tech, defensive end, situational, wherever they need me,” Irving said.tmpplchld Irving is simply just happy to have a spot on a 53-man roster.tmpplchld Irving, listed at 6-foot-7, 273-pounds, has upside but off-field issues were one of the reasons he went undrafted last May. He was dismissed from Iowa State’s team in 2014 for an incident in which he was charged with fifth-degree theft, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief. He also had a domestic abuse charge dropped from an incident in 2013.tmpplchld Asked what he learned from his off-field incidents, Irving said: “Stay out of trouble (laughs). I got into a lot, some trouble at Iowa State. All I could do after once I did the things I did was learn from it and fix it and I haven’t been in trouble since. Just stay out of trouble.”tmpplchld Irving is looking forward to this opportunity, and he should get plenty of chances to show what he can do with the Cowboys thin on defensive linemen. Greg Hardy still has one game left on his four-game suspension, and Randy Gregory is sidelined with a high ankle sprain.tmpplchld The defensive tackles on the 53-man roster for now include Tyrone Crawford, Nick Hayden and Ken Bishop with Jack Crawford and Jeremy Mincey having the ability to play both spots.tmpplchld Irving gives them another versatile body, and he is a promising player. In 32 games with the Cyclones, Irving had 44 tackles, three sacks and returned an interception for a touchdown.tmpplchld “Obviously, I was appreciative for the Chiefs. They were the only team that took a shot at me,” Irving said. “I want to get on the field. I kind of had to go active. I’m ready to get out there and keep improving and heightening my level of play, so I’m very excited. I can’t wait to get on the field.tmpplchld “I have a bigger opportunity to really improve my game, so I’m really looking forward to it.”tmpplchld ___tmpplchld (c)2015 Fort Worth Star-Telegramtmpplchld Visit the Fort Worth Star-Telegram at www.star-telegram.comtmpplchld Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.tmpplchld
