Yankees to own share of New York’s second Major League Soccer team

New York will get a second Major League Soccer team jointly owned by Manchester City FC of the English Premier League and the New York Yankees, MLS announced Tuesday.

The team will be called the New York City Football Club and is expected to start play in 2015, which would give the league 20 teams overall.

The MLS already has the New York Red Bulls -- which defeated the Galaxy on Sunday, 1-0 -- but their home stadium is in Harrison, N.J.

Executives of the new team said they plan to build a stadium somewhere within New York City itself and already have held talks about possibly constructing a facility in Queens.

“Until that time, the new team is arranging to play in an interim home beginning in its inaugural MLS season in 2015,” the MLS said.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber said “we look forward to an intense crosstown rivalry” between the two New York clubs, and that the expansion “is a transformational development that will elevate the league to new heights in this country.”

Manchester City will be the majority owner of the new team, which already has a website, with the Yankees as an investor.
