Aldon Smith shines in ‘MNF’ spotlight; Jason Campbell not so much

Aldon Smith had more than twice as many sacks as he’s had in a single game during his two-year NFL career. He had the second-most in San Francisco 49ers history. He now has more than anyone else in the league this season.

And the defensive end did more than enough to ruin the night for backup quarterback Jason Campbell and the Chicago Bears, who lost to Smith and the 49ers, 32-7, on “Monday Night Football.”

Smith’s 5 1/2 sacks gave him 15 for the season. Fred Dean holds the franchise record of six sacks in a single game, a mark set in 1983.

“I think I have a thing for night games, I love playing at night,” said Smith, who has 25 career sacks. “I love playing under the lights.”

Campbell, who got the start while Jay Cutler recovers from a concussion, got a pretty good view of those lights from his back throughout the game. The former starter for the Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders was sacked five times and was slow to get up after a hit by Ahmad Brooks midway through the third quarter.

“Tonight was probably the worst nightmare,” said Campbell, who completed 14 of 22 passes for 107 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

But it was a dream come true for another backup quarterback. Colin Kaepernick, who made his first NFL start while San Francisco’s Alex Smith also recovers from a concussion, threw the first two touchdowns of what appears to be a promising career and finished with 243 passing yards.

“I wanted to come out and show what I’m capable of and show that I can be a starter,” the two-year pro said. “That’s what I’ve been trying to prove since I’ve been here.”
