Metta World Peace: I didn’t know who Knicks coach was when I signed

Maybe it’s a good thing Metta World Peace didn’t know exactly what he was getting into when he signed with the New York Knicks in the off-season.

The former Lakers forward told ESPN this week that he didn’t even know who the Knicks’ coach was when he signed with the team. With the Clippers extending the Knicks’ losing streak to seven games Wednesday, World Peace might not want to get too used to the idea of Mike Woodson being the team’s coach.

“I honestly didn’t even know who the coach was when I was coming to New York,” World Peace said. “I just wanted to win a championship; I didn’t even know who was coaching. I didn’t care. It could have been Aunt Jemima. They could have had the syrup coaching. I was coming here regardless. I just wanted to win a championship here.”

The Knicks definitely are in a sticky situation, and World Peace’s admitting he initially didn’t know who the team’s coach was last summer may be somewhat indicative of the dysfunction currently plaguing the team.

Still, World Peace isn’t worried about New York’s 3-11 start.

“We’re not struggling,” World Peace said. “It’s part of life. You know how life is. We had a bad hair day, you know?”

While World Peace’s glowing optimism can be appreciated, the Knicks have had more than just a bad hair day this season. If they don’t turn things around quickly, Woodson’s tenure in New York could end soon.
