Regan Smith’s Brickyard 400 car to honor Colorado shooting victims

INDIANAPOLIS -- The car driven by Regan Smith in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will have a special paint scheme at Sunday’s Brickyard 400 that pays tribute to the victims of the recent Colorado theater shooting.

Smith’s team is Furniture Row Racing, whose general manager, Joe Garone, noted that “the movie theater where the shooting took place is only a few miles from where our team is based in Denver.”

The scheme on Smith’s No. 78 Chevrolet, which was being painted on the car Friday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, will include “Aurora, CO” on the side and the names of the 12 people who died in the shooting.

There also will be an inscription on the back of the car that reads “For Those Lost, Those Injured and Countless Acts of Bravery 7/20/12.”

“We mourn the loss of life from this senseless tragedy, and feel we also need to stand up and acknowledge the heroism of those people who put their lives on the line to save others,” Garone said in a statement.

Furniture Row is a one-car team in the Cup series, and the 28-year-old Smith won his first and only Cup race last year at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway.
