NBA’s trade deadline is almost a non-event

The NBA’s trade deadline was D.O.A.

There was little movement of note Thursday, unless you count part-time starting shooting guard J.J. Redick going from one bad team (Orlando) to a middling playoff contender (Milwaukee) as part of a six-player trade.

Dwight Howard remained a Laker. Josh Smith stayed in Atlanta. Clipper guard Eric Bledsoe put off having to buy those cute little change-of-address cards.

Maybe the lack of trades shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise given the two blockbusters that already transpired: James Harden going from Oklahoma City to Houston on the eve of the season and Rudy Gay getting his passport stamped last month on the way from Memphis to Toronto.

As always, economics factored into every deal.

The Magic decided it wanted to go cheaper at backup shooting guard with starter Arron Afflalo having three more years left on his contract.

As part of the Redick deal, the Magic also sent center Gustavo Ayon and point guard Ish Smith to the Bucks for Doron Lamb, Tobias Harris and Beno Udrih.

In a separate trade, Orlando sent the well-traveled Josh McRoberts to Charlotte for Hakim Warrick.

Other deals included a slew of backups and recent draft picks already in need of a change of scenery.

The Kings traded rookie Thomas Robinson, the fifth pick in the 2012 draft, to Houston for Patrick Patterson, Cole Aldrich and Toney Douglas. Meanwhile, Houston traded second-year forward Marcus Morris to Phoenix for a second-round draft pick.

Defending champion Miami actually depleted its roster, sending forward-center Dexter Pittman and a second-round pick to Memphis for a trade exception.

Atlanta didn’t find any Smith proposals to its liking but did send Anthony Morrow to Dallas in exchange for Dahntay Jones.

In other trades barely worthy of the agate page, Oklahoma City sent backup point guard Eric Maynor to Portland for a trade exception and the rights to Giorgio Printezis, a 27-year-old Greek forward.

Toronto center Hamed Haddadi switched teams for the second time in two months, going from Toronto along with a second-round draft pick to Phoenix in exchange for backup point guard Sebastian Telfair. Haddadi had been part of the Gay trade last month.

Leondro Barbosa was on the move even though he won’t play again the rest of this season, the injured guard going from Boston along with center Jason Collins to Washington in exchange for guard Jordan Crawford.
