Kings defenseman Drew Doughty and forward Jeff Carter, and Ducks forwards Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry were named to Team Canada’s roster for the Sochi Olympics on Tuesday, giving both Southern California teams strong representation at next month’s Winter Games.

As expected, Ducks winger Teemu Selanne was nominated by Finland on Tuesday for his sixth Olympic appearance. However, his compatriot and Ducks teammate Saku Koivu withdrew from consideration.

According to a Ducks spokesman, Koivu felt it was not in his best interests to play at the Olympics given his age (39) and the fact he had missed time this season because of injuries.

Ducks defenseman Sami Vatanen was chosen to play for Finland and Ducks winger Jakob Silfverberg was picked for Team Sweden. Kings defenseman Slava Voynov was chosen for the roster of host Russia.

The roster for defending champion Canada included several surprise names, and a few notable omissions.

Dallas’ Jamie Benn, Colorado’s Matt Duchene, Pittsburgh’s Chris Kunitz, the New York Rangers’ Rick Nash and San Jose’s Patrick Marleau made the squad, though there was widespread speculation that the slumping Nash would be passed over and debate over whether Kunitz deserved to be selected or was merely feasting off linemate Sidney Crosby’s passing.

San Jose’s Joe Thornton, Tampa Bay’s Martin St. Louis and Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux, who were all considered possible picks, did not make the team.

Carter’s name was a mild surprise, though his goal-scoring ability apparently got him the nod over other candidates, His Kings teammate and frequent linemate, Mike Richards, didn’t earn a spot.

Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos was chosen despite being out of the lineup because of a broken leg. However, he has been practicing lately and might return soon. Teams can replace injured players until hours before the Sochi tournament opener.
