The BMW PGA Championship -- a prestigious stop on the European Tour -- took a few hits this week.

Patrick Reed unexpectedly withdrew from the tournament, which is scheduled to begin at Wentworth Golf Club in England on Thursday, saying he “will not be able to travel overseas at this time.”

Instead, Reed is listed in the field at the Colonial in Dallas this week.

At a Tuesday news conference, German golfer Martin Kaymer wondered if the BMW PGA should be shifted to another part of the season.

“It’s going to be difficult to plan around the U.S. Open and the British Open,” Kaymer told reporters. “But for such a big event you should get the best date.”

European players have worried that May is too early in the year for optimum conditions on Wentworth’s greens.
