The selfie says it all.

Rory McIlroy snapped a photo of his own left foot propped in front of the television with a bulky cast around the ankle -- the ankle that will keep him from defending his title at the British Open this summer.

The No. 1-ranked golfer made the announcement via social media on Wednesday. He ruptured a ligament while playing soccer with friends in Northern Ireland over the weekend.

“I’m taking a long term view of this injury and, although rehab is progressing well, I want to come back to tournament play when I feel 100% healthy and 100% competitive,” he wrote.

The Open is scheduled for next week at St. Andrews. It remained unclear whether McIlroy would recover in time to defend his titles at the Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship in coming weeks.
