Russell Wilson named Seahawks’ starting quarterback

Pete Carroll has named Russell Wilson the Seattle Seahawks’ regular-season starting quarterback, according to reports.

Wilson’s impressive preseason performance propelled him to the top spot on the depth chart.

The third-round selection from Wisconsin in this year’s draft passed for 185 yards and two touchdowns, completing 13 of 19 attempts during his first preseason start against Kansas City on Friday night. He also rushed for 58 yards on two carries during the Seahawks’ 44-14 trouncing of the Chiefs.

Through three preseason games, Wilson has completed 35 of 52 passes (67.3%) for 464 yards and five touchdowns with one interception. He’s also rushed for 150 yards and one touchdown.

Matt Flynn, who signed a three-year, $19-million deal, with $10 million guaranteed, during the offseason, will be Wilson’s backup. Flynn completed 17 of 26 passes for 102 yards with zero touchdowns and one interception in two lackluster starts this preseason. He didn’t play during the team’s third game.

Last year’s starting quarterback for the Seahawks, Tarvaris Jackson, was shipped to the Buffalo Bills, according to reports from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Michael Lombardi.

Wilson joins Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill and Brandon Weeden as rookie quarterbacks that have been named starters heading into the regular season.
