UCLA opens NCAA tournament against Tulsa in San Diego

UCLA will open the NCAA tournament Friday against Tulsa in a South Regional game at Viejas Arena in San Diego.

The fourth-seeded Bruins would play either fifth-seeded Virginia Commonwealth and 12th-seeded Stephen F. Austin on Sunday. UCLA would play in Memphis in the regional semifinals, where it could face top-seeded Florida, the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed.

Tulsa, seeded 13th, won the Conference USA tournament. The Golden Hurricane (21-12) is led by 6-foot-3 guard James Woodward, who averages 15.7 points, and 6-7 forward Rashad Smith, who averages 12.1.

The Bruins (26-8) lost to Tulsa in the first round of the 1994 NCAA tournament.
