USC football: Freshman Max Browne keeps competitive mind-set
Third-year sophomores Max Wittek and Cody Kessler are competing to become USC’s starting quarterback.
So is Max Browne, though the freshman from Sammamish, Wash., is probably on track to redshirt unless Wittek or Kessler are injured.
The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Browne has filled out physically since spring practice and made some impressive throws during the first three days of training camp.
Browne has mainly taken snaps with the reserves, but coaches have told him that all three quarterbacks are competing for the starting job.
“I just try to focus on the reps that I’m getting, whether it’s the ones, twos or threes, and make the most of them,” Browne said. “I’m not trying to count them, but just making sure my completion percentage is up and making sure I get better every day.”
USC will scrimmage for the first time on Thursday.
The Trojans open the season Aug. 29 at Hawaii.
